eBRAM welcomes the Government’s support to further Hong Kong’s role as an International Legal and Dispute Resolution Services Centre in the APAC region

7 October 2021

(Hong Kong, 7 October 2021) The eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre (“eBRAM”) welcomed new initiatives in the Policy Address 2021 to support Hong Kong’s role as a major international legal and dispute resolution services centre in the Asia-Pacific Region.

These initiatives include attracting more international dispute resolution centres to be set up in Hong Kong, hosting the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization Annual Meeting and the inter-sessional meeting of Working Group III of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (“UNCITRAL”).

Dr Thomas So JP, Chairman of eBRAM, said, “as an online dispute resolution and LawTech pioneer, we are happy to see the support from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in the development of legal and dispute resolution sectors. I am much honoured to be invited to speak at the UNCITRAL inter-session meeting, which is an excellent platform not only to showcase Hong Kong’s dispute resolution capacity but also strengthen our thought leadership role in this aspect.”

In respect of the capacity building, we appreciated the effort of the Department of Justice in refining the Talent List and relaxing the qualification requirements for arbitrators and mediators on past experience in handling international commercial disputes and regularising the Pilot Scheme on Facilitation for Persons Participating in Arbitral Proceedings in Hong Kong, enabling more competent talents to join the dispute resolution profession.
